NIFDA’s 2025 Award Recipients

Each year, the National Independent Flag Dealers Association (NIFDA) recognizes individuals whose dedication, leadership, and service leave a lasting impact on our association, the flag industry, and their communities. In 2025, we are proud to honor two exceptional leaders whose contributions reflect the values NIFDA was built upon.

2025 Betsy Ross Award for Service

Laurie Olsen, A Stars & Stripes Flag Corporation

The Betsy Ross Award for Service honors a NIFDA member who has gone above and beyond in service to the association, the flag industry, fellow members, and their community.

This year’s recipient, Laurie Olsen, exemplifies that spirit of service in every sense. Even after completing her term on the NIFDA Board, Laurie has continued to support the association through her time, leadership, and institutional knowledge—always willing to step in, help problem-solve, and advocate for the success of independent flag dealers nationwide.

Beyond her work with NIFDA, Laurie is deeply committed to giving back to her community. She volunteers with Tutoring Chicago, providing one-on-one mentorship, and serves on the board of Bloom360 Learning Community, a nonprofit school supporting neurodivergent children and young adults.

Laurie’s dedication to service—both within the industry and beyond it—makes her a truly deserving recipient of the 2025 Betsy Ross Award.

2025 George Washington Award

Carl “Gus” Porter III, WGN Flag & Decorating Co.

Presented every five years, the George Washington Award is one of NIFDA’s highest honors, recognizing individuals who demonstrate excellence in both their professional and personal lives—and who have made extraordinary contributions to the flag industry and their peers.

This year’s recipient, Carl “Gus” Porter III, is a fourth-generation industry leader with more than 40 years of experience. A true flag enthusiast, Gus has served as NIFDA’s longtime headquarters, playing a vital role in supporting the association’s evolving needs over the years.

Known for his generosity, insight, and steady leadership, Gus has consistently offered guidance to fellow professionals while upholding the traditions, values, and integrity that define the flag industry. His lifelong commitment to service and excellence embodies the legacy of the George Washington Award.

Celebrating Leadership That Moves the Industry Forward

NIFDA is proud to recognize leaders like Laurie Olsen and Gus Porter—individuals whose dedication strengthens our association and elevates the flag industry as a whole. Their service reminds us that this industry is built not only on craftsmanship and tradition, but on community, mentorship, and shared values.
